# InitiationType

A model the API reference uses in a request or a response. The operation pages link every field typed as this model here.

Identifies who initiated a payment transaction. Required for PCI-compliant stored credential handling
and for correctly flagging transactions to card networks (CIT vs MIT indicators).

## Values

| Value | Description |
| --- | --- |
| `CardholderInitiated` | The cardholder is present or otherwise authorizing this specific charge contemporaneously. Default for transactions originated by the cardholder through HPP checkout, API with cardholder interaction, or virtual terminal sales with the cardholder present. |
| `MerchantInitiated` | The merchant is initiating this charge without contemporaneous cardholder authorization, relying on prior consent captured on an earlier cardholder-initiated transaction. Used for recurring billing, unscheduled credential-on-file charges, resubmissions, and other merchant-triggered uses of a stored credential. |
